Map the Gaps South Ayrshire is a targeted project to dramatically improve the availability and accuracy of disabled access information for South Ayrshire's coastal communities on EuansGuide.com, the UK's leading disabled access review website used by over 50,000 people every month.
Currently just 49 venues are listed for South Ayrshire on the platform, and nearly half of those reviews have not been updated in over five years. For disabled people planning a visit to Ayr, Troon, Prestwick or Girvan, reliable access information is simply not there. Our research shows that 42% of disabled people will avoid a venue entirely rather than risk turning up somewhere they can't access.
The funding will be used to deliver the following activity across 6 months:
Community engagement and review coordination — working with local disabled people, community groups and Voluntary Action South Ayrshire (VASA) to recruit volunteer reviewers and coordinate review activity across South Ayrshire's coastal towns, targeting venues currently absent or out of date on EuansGuide.com.
Red Cord Card distribution — delivering Red Cord Cards to at least 100 accessible toilets across the region. These simple, proven cards remind venue staff to keep emergency pull cords within reach. One in five of our Red Cord Card volunteers has had to pull the red cord during an emergency, yet 95% tell us they regularly find the cords cut off or tied up out of reach.
Venue outreach and listing support — directly engaging local businesses, hospitality venues and tourist attractions to encourage them to list on EuansGuide.com and share their access information, supported by accessible venue packs and print materials.
Local awareness and communications — raising awareness of Euan's Guide among South Ayrshire's disabled community through social media, local press and community group outreach, ensuring more people can benefit from and contribute to the platform.
Monitoring and evaluation — tracking and reporting on all project outcomes including number of new reviews, venues listed, Red Cord Cards distributed and volunteers recruited.
By the end of the project, Map the Gaps Ayrshire will have more than doubled disabled access review coverage for South Ayrshire, increased venue listings by at least 25%, and built a sustainable local volunteer community to keep that information growing long after the project ends.
