Developing nature-based learning opportunities at Auchincruive.
In relation to the identified priorities in the Guidance & Essential criteria what will your idea achieve and who will benefit from your project?
Renovating our yurt provides a safe, inclusive, year-round space for nature learning, aligning with South Ayrshire's priorities for spaces, education, Net Zero, and reducing inequalities.
Please describe what you plan to do and what the money will be used for? (i.e., purchase equipment/resources)
We are seeking funding to renovate an out-of-use yurt at our Ayrshire site, restoring it as a safe, dry and weatherproof space for children, young people, staff and community service users throughout the year. The yurt is the most robust structure on the site and was previously used as a small library, storytelling area and sheltered space. It provides an excellent space for vulnerable groups, such as the very young and old, neurodiverse individuals coping with sensory overload and those needing to nurse infants. However, its wooden footings have decayed, making it unsafe and unsuitable for use.
We plan to replace the tarpaulin covering our outdoor cooking area too, due to the versatility of the space it provides in our outdoor education site.
The project will involve carefully dismantling the yurt, constructing a solid and durable base, replacing damaged internal timbers, and rebuilding and weatherproofing the structure. A new solid-fuel stove will be professionally installed to ensure that heating and ventilation meet appropriate safety standards. Once complete, the yurt will be refurbished as a warm and welcoming indoor area where groups can read, share stories, learn about nature and shelter during wet, cold or otherwise challenging weather.
This work must be undertaken by suitably skilled professional tradespeople rather than purely by volunteers. The structural base, waterproofing and installation of a new solid-fuel stove are safety-critical tasks, particularly because the space will be used by children, employees and other service users. Funding will therefore be used towards both professional labour costs and materials.
The total project costs are £8,456 and we have match funding of £3,500 already pledged to cover material costs and labour for the solid durable base, demonstrating Little Acorns' commitment to the project and ensuring that your funding will unlock a fully resourced and deliverable renovation.
