In relation to the identified priorities in the Guidance & Essential criteria what will your idea achieve and who will benefit from your project?

The idea for a mural in the Alloway Tunnel is to transform an unsightly and vandalised space into an attractive place that the community can enjoy as they walk along the active travel path. Working with ARA we have also upgraded the path to make it safer and more accessible and well connected. The community will benefit with a safe, beautiful space to walk, wheel, cycle and also to hold events. It’s now a more attractive place to live and work. The main impact has been civic pride and a special

Please describe what you plan to do and what the money will be used for? (i.e., purchase equipment/resources)

  1. We have completed two out of four stages of the mural art project, and we require additional funding towards paying our artist fees and materials to enable us to complete the Stage 3 of the mural by March 2026.

  1. We want to continue our community engagement and raise the awareness of the ART mural to the Ayrshire community. We wish to do this by linking with a local community group, Dementia Friendly, Prestwick. Their members have previously got involved in the project by painting part of the mural. Now we want to develop our relationship with them by arranging a special event to launch their artwork: Dementia Friendly Guided Tour so they can see their work installed in the mural and experience this arts project and feel valued and included in their community. We will learn from this inaugral event and in the future be able to offer more dementia friendly guided walks in the tunnel for older people in the wider South Ayrshire community.

The funding will pay for:

  • Transport to bring participants and their carers to/from Alloway.
  • Tour guide from ‘Tasting History Ayrshire Tours’ who will plan, organise and lead the tour which will involve storytelling from ‘Agnes Burns’ character, recitals of poems and musical performances from local musicians.
  • Refreshments in the tunnel and at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum
  • Printed information sheets acting as a visual anchor for the dementia group participants.

Location: The mural is in Alloway Railway Tunnel, Alloway, South Ayrshire.

Proposed on behalf of: The Project The Alloway Railway Tunnel is an inclusive arts and heritage community project creating a stunning art installation within the old, dilapidated railway tunnel at the Brig O’ Doon, Alloway. With a total length of 300m it will be one of the largest murals in Scotland. We’re engaging through a professional muralist delivering mural art workshops – enabling the community to get involved in painting the mural and creating 30 heritage short documentary films viewed via QR codes from the mural. What stands out is the scale of the project. it’s an ambitious, innovative, interactive mural. The outcome is a jaw droppingly beautiful interactive artwork for the community to enjoy and learn about Ayrshire history. We are working in partnership with Prestwick Dementia Friendly Group, Tasting History Ayrshire Tours and Cycling Without Age organisation to organise a special event to launch a new section of artwork in the mural.
